What this is, and why it matters to a business with an address

Google reads your site as text. It can guess that "12 High Street" is an address, but it does not know for certain, and it cannot tell whether that phone number is yours or belongs to a supplier you mention. Structured data tells it unambiguously, in a format built for machines.

For a local business this is not a technical detail. It is what lets you appear when someone searches for what you do plus where you are, and what makes it possible for Google to show your opening hours or phone directly in the results.

How to use the code it generates

  • Fill in the fields you know. Anything left blank will not appear in the code.
  • Copy the block and paste it into your site, just before the </head> tag.
  • On WordPress any plugin that adds header code will do; Wix and Shopify both have a custom code section.
  • Check it afterwards in Google's Rich Results Test, which will tell you whether it read it correctly.

One detail missing beats one invented

Leave a field blank and it simply is not included. That is deliberate: publishing hours you do not keep, or an approximate address, is worse than publishing nothing, because Google shows them to people who will turn up at your door.

Common questions

Will this move me up in Google?

Not directly. It is not a ranking factor in itself. What it does is let Google understand your business without guessing, which helps it show you in the right searches with the right information.

Does it replace a Google Business Profile?

No, they are different things and you want both. The profile is your presence in Maps; this is what your own website tells Google. When they agree, they reinforce each other.

What do I put for "type of business"?

The most specific one that fits. If you are a dental clinic, "Dentist" beats "LocalBusiness". If none fits well, leave "LocalBusiness", which is the correct generic.

Do I have to update it if my hours change?

Yes. Out-of-date hours in structured data are worse than none, because someone may travel to your business trusting them.
